If you got 157k out of your stock non greasbale joints then thank the truck god. that is amazing. And to answer your question yes. Many discussions in here about this issue with the X and ball joints.

thanks

Good that makes me feel better to knoe I got a good life out of them. Being a woman and driving this I did not know if that was something that could happen at that mileage or if this was an unusual event for that part.

Thanks again

I got 175,000 out of mine (2000 psd) and only replaced them when trying to eliminate the infamous wandering problem. (The two mechanics I had examine the Ex said it "could be the ball joints," but were not sure.) Anyway, I still have the same wandering problem, so bottom line, there really was nothing wrong with the ball joints. I've tried the steering box tightening procedure, replaced the stock steering stabilizer with a fancy Rancho one, but nothing has worked. Any additional suggestions out there would be greatly appreciated because I would love to enjoy driving my Ex again, but it is quite a chore just to keep it going down the road straight.

ball joint replaced today

Had to have the ball joint replaced, because it completly seperated from the joint the tie rod broke from the wheel. Almost ended up in a ditch, but thank goodness I had not gotten on the highway, was just about to. Controlling it at 30 mph was hard enough , I can't imagine if i had been going 70mph. Had it towed to shop, the replaced with Moog ( do not know if I spelled that right.)

CJPS pack you are another unusual case. Most of us X owners will get max of 50 K out of a ball joint. If you are wandering on the road you may want to check your tires. If you have done all that and you are still wandering it could also be a bad spring. Are you wandering to one side only or back and forth?

redoaks I am glad to see you or nobody else got hurt with this situation. You are right it would have been near impossible to control at 70. Good choiuce with the Moog joint. Make sure you tell your mechanic to grease whne they are under the truck changing the oil.

NJSTEVENS, the wandering is back and forth, all over the road. The tires could have something to do with it, but they are decent Michelins with about 15,000 miles left on them. I have considered changing them, but hate to put out $800 for another trial-and-error attempt. However, if I knew it would fix it, I'd do it in a heartbeat!

cjspack, is your Ex lifted, my 02 was doing that, ended up being the pitman arm, put new one on with lift kit, tightened the livin bejeesus out of it,,,, it didn't turn but MAYBE 3 or four flats, (hope you know what I mean) maybe 3/4 - 1 turn but it made ALL the difference in the world, cousins Ex, and 2 friends F-series all were loose, not a lot mind you, just a smidgen you wouldn't think would matter,,, turn wheels all the way to the right and turn off engina, BIG crescent, tighten. It is free to try...

Thanks pickupmanx2. Mine is not lifted. I'm willing to try almost anything, especially the inexpensive fixes first. Thanks again. C.J.
