By the way, 90k and no ball joints either,,,, still tight as a frogs ,,, drives great, I check the pitman arm about every other oil change, roll around underneath and make sure it all looks good while its draining. Just replaced the stock rotors and stock brakes. I am really curious about this wandering problem,,,,, I mean, I'm not a smart man Jenny, but sumtin aint right,,,, maybe check the bolts that hold the steering gear box to the frame?! Had a 66 that one was loose, and one was broke,,,
Maybe check your leaf spring bushings on each end, or your panhard rod, (the one that goes from drivers side under engina to axle) I have seen and helped replace the leaf spring bushings on a SD, the guy said it made a world of difference....
umm check your steering dampner, had a guy who got a shock instead and put it on,,, it would steer easy one way, hard the other, said it was all over the road,,,
maybe open the hood, stand in the drivers door, look through the gap between hood and cowl and slightly move steering wheel, and follow it all the way down, make sure there isn't slop somewhere.
Had my daughter help me with my 77, turned out to be track arm (panhard) bushings, c-bushings and radius arm bushings.
Thanks for the advice, Pickupman. Since the weather is turning a little warmer now, I'm going to take an afternoon and check out some of your ideas. Thanks again, I'll let you know how it all turns out. C.J.
Pickupmanx2, when you said you tightened your pittman arm, which end were you referring to? The nut with the cotter pin or the bigger nut on the upper end?
I've got 2000 X V10. 105K. Replaced all the ball joints, rotors and calipers. After the right side ball joints at 100K the truck wandered all over. Like it was oversteering. Very sensitive, any steering wheel movement the truck would take off. I took it back to the shop, they said the toe adjustment was out. They thought the tie rod had slipped and it may need replaced. Been watching that, though no problems since they readjusted the toe.
Sorry for the delay, the BIG one that comes out of the steering gear box, it doesn't take alot, I was amazed at how little it moved, and how much it helped.
