I have a '88 Cougar 302 EFI with the stock AOD transmission that I want to put in my '65 F-100 shortbed. I have the whole Cougar, so can I keep the EFI for the 302 Lo-po? Does the computer from the Cougar require me to completely change the wiring harness?
I simply want the Electronically Controlled Fuel Injection hooked to my old dash and light system.
The AOD should only be a problem if I convert the 302 to a carb. which is not truely desired.
The truck previously had a 302 3spd (already pulled), and the Cougar engine and trans are together but pulled.
Seth, I think it is a good thing that you still have the donor and using some of the wiring harness will be required. The computer is reading sensors to run the efi system. The AOD is not computer controlled so using it is not a problem.
Water temp, and oil pressure were the two main gauges in the 65, converting them should be easy.
Try to unplug the harnesses and don't cut wires if you can help it. You should be ok.
You shouldn't have any problems with your gauges. Just use the temp and oil sender off the old engine. The computer has it's own temp sender and doesn't monitor the oil pressure. The 88 Cougar should still have the old style 3 wire alternator so you won't have to change that harness. All you really have to do is modify the EFI harness to your engine bay design and hook it up to your ignition.
I am doing the same swap out of an 87' lincoln continental, also had the 302efi with an AOD. I have them both out now, you can see from my gallery. I think I am ditching the AOD for a c-4 , as they are pain to get to shift right (adjusting the cable) and the c-4 is all around stronger. you shouldn't have too much trouble with the wiring harness, but like they said, keep the car around untill the truck is running...

Wasn't the AOD installed behind 460s?
With the price of gas going where it is, the AOD would be going into my truck.
Hey guys I was wondering what parts i would need to change or swap to convert a 302 efi out of a 1990 f150 to a carburated motor? any info would be appreciated.
im putting a 302 aod combo out of a 86 thunderbird and had pretty much the same questions( mine is came with carb) my prob is hooking up a speedo cable
There is plenty of info on adjusting the AOD out there. I am using a regular 2bbl carb and AOD combo with a Lokar TV cable. Very strong and positive shifts. I fashioned a .4" spacer to do my adjustments out of an old toothbrush handle. There is a TV pressure setting at idle and another at .4" throttle travel. The Lokar TV cable allows plenty of adjustment. The items needed are the TV cable, the spacer block, a pressure gauge connected to the TV port on the passenger side of the tranny, and a homemade bracket to hold the TV cable adjuster to the intake manifold (right near the throttle cable). As a side note, I would really strive to keep the EFI and the cable that came with the motor/trans combo. The EFI will be better in the long run on mileage and maintainability. There are some things which really have been improved upon in the years since our trucks came along and fuel management one definately one of them.
