I need help bad

Ok first i have a '94 EB Bronco 5.0L with 117,000 mile on it

Now the problem: I was coming back to school from Virginia to Alabama. about 800 miles. Right after I filled up with gas I started getting a knocking. I figured bad gas and I am still hoping that that is what the problem is. But I was driving myself to class I noticed that my oil pressure gague was jumping back and forth between 0 and normal like crazy it was quite frantic like. This made me a little nervous cause I began to think that the knocking might not just be bad gas it might be a lack of oil pressure. I also realized that it doesn't seem to jump unless I am going less than 60mph but that might just be a coincidense.
And today to top it off I heard what sounded like a vacum/exhaust leak just sound like air being pushed out of the engine bay but 2 minutes later it was gone.

Some one please Try to explain it to me cause I am starting to worry that my truck has gone to crap in the last 5 day.

The first thing I would do is remove the oil sending unit and put a mechanical gauge on and see what the oil pressure really is.Those sending units can go bad.Now the knocking,is it a pinging noise or valve train rattle or a knock from deep in the motor?I would'nt drive it much until I verified the oil pressure is ok.

Yep, and the oil pump requires some extensive labor (at least on my 90). You might want to shop around some. Dealers tend to charge much higher for similar work. You could probably find a shop that will do it cheaper. Good Luck!

also, how long did it knock? you may have done some serious damage to the lower end of the motor.

sorry, i know that doesnt help but you may want to concider a rebuild of the whole engine if youre gonna pay 700 bucks for an oil pump! a few hundred more and you could have a fresh motor!

Check out this website for rebuilt motors. You can get a 302 long block with a seven year 70,000 mile warranty and free shipping for under a $1,000.00. Might be worth the extra if your gonna pay $700.00 for a oil pump. I rebuilt my motor myself for about $1200.00 and I have no warranty, wish I knew about this place before I did mine

Hope this helps,

The engine only knocked for a couple of days. I know I really need to look into a rebulid but I can't do it right now for several reasons...its my daily driver and i have class every day and other activities that I need to attend reguarlly and I don't have the money this 700 is on loan from my parents who aren't really happy about it in the first place.

Hopefully the replacement will work the price is so high cause of labor they said its an eight hour job. which I doubt but it needs to get fixed and i don't have the resources at the moment to do it myself.

Thanks for the help guys.

why dont you just take the 700 bucks and buy a little beater car or something. park the bronco and save money to get a new motor! this is just me but there's no way in hell id pay 700 bucks for just an oil pump when a fresh motor is only a few hundred more.

ive had a few beater cars..... i got an 87 escort once for 50 bucks and it came with a case of beer! that little car got me around for 6 months! another beater i had was a 72 pontiac with a 400ci big block! that car was fun! i only paid 300 bucks for it and drove it for 4 months back and forth to work which was about a 40mi round trip! it blew a radiator hose on the highway one day and when i went back to fix it, it was gone. towed away by the cops. i just let it go, wasnt worth the money to get it out of impound!

look in the paper or in a tradin times or tradin post type of paper. im sure youll find something to drive around while you save for a fresh motor.

I had the same problem long ago on a F-100 pickup.Same situation poor broke college student liked to freaked when I called around and got a price to fix it.Got a case of beer and a buddy helped fix it over a weekend. It's not hard just a lot of labor. You have to remove the plenum so you can jack the motor up high enough to clear the exhaust and drop the pan down.

Buy a REAL oil pressure guage to determine if the pump is bad. If you need to replace it, a high volume pump is not too much money and it should take you about 1/2 a day to do it yourself (if you are inclined to turn a wrench).

No your problem just can not be properly diagnosed with words here it is time for you ti investigate.

Is the motor running? Are you still driving it? Look for the vacuum leak you heard too, get an oil pressure guage and let the forum know.

I had to do the same thing with mine, a real pain when the exhaust lines don't move out of the way enough. It took us half a day to get the pan off!

Well you certainly have gotten a lot of response. First of all my suggestion would be not to drive it until you are sure you have oil pressure because the alternative is spending 700 bills on an engine you just drove into the ground. So get that done by whatever means you have available, either a good mechanic or a buddy who could help you out. Then I would recommend calling a couple of mechanics and seeing how much they would estimate for changing the oil pump. Ford can be on the high side to do repairs, although my experience has been pretty good I do know people who have overpaid at dealerships. The other point I'd like to make that engine maybe getting on the tired side and if the cylinders are damaged by this recent occurence or just fatigue, Pilotrick maybe right, cause to spend the 7 now and have to rebuild in a year or two would be a shame. I certainly know how it is when things are tight but I just wanted to make sure you know where you stand. Good luck and with whatever you decide consider more than just the obvious. Tearing in and changing parts isn't always the answer but when it is... go for it.
