I'm wanting to improve the rear suspension of my 2000 expy. When I pull the boat the rear of the expy wants to sag. What products are out there to help this. Firestone has a "Coil rite" air bag add on that is the only thing I can find. I don't want to spent a ton of money either.
About 2 years ago, I put the Air Lift bags in the rear coil springs. I also added the auto-leveling sensor and pump. Since they don't make this kit for the Expy, all I had to add was a cutoff valve to keep the bags under 40lbs of pressure. All total, I think I spent $350 and a weekend. IT WORKS GREAT. I have had the back of my truck FULL of concrete block and these bags brought it back to level. All summer long, I tow a trailer and I know I've exceeded the 500lb tongue weight on occassion but the thing always rides level. I put this system on at the same time I spent $1,000 bucks for a good set of tires - I know it is helping the tires to wear evenly too. It acts sort-of like a lift kit because even with a load of people and camping gear, it rides like it's empty. I suppose you get the idea that I am happy with it... I'm happy to give further details if you want them.
I recently install the airlift bags in my rear springs and the sureset control system. The system works very well for me as I do a lot of towing and hauling. That system automatically mantains the pressure you set for each individual side and defaults to 5 lbs. if not set. If you install the bags and a compressor setup together it gives you a lifetime warrenty.
I also recently installed the airlift 1000 air bags in my 2000 exp.I installed them at the same time as 4 billstein HD shocks and I must say the ride is tons better.I even ran the airbags at max pressure to feel the ride unloaded, not that much stiffer in feel but much higher in ride height. I am sure these will help when loaded. At 20 psi in the bags my truck never moves when I hook my utility trailer up. My load is usually around 1000 lbs. I plan on adding the air controller later to make pressure adjustments easier. It cost me 90 bucks for the bags and 250 for the shocks money well spent.
The cheapest solution - right out of the box gives you the ability to pump them up with a gas station or other air source. A second option is to mount a small compressor (from AirLift) and push a button when you want to raise the level. The third option is if you want the auto-leveling. In this case, you will have to construct your own brackets for the sensor and add a cutoff because the bags can't go above 40lbs.
