I just changed the serpentine belt on my early 99 and noticed that there is some play in the power steering pulley. The play is not left/right, it is in/out. The belt only lasted about 5000 miles and was beginning to shred, that is what brought this to my attention. My question is can the pulley be replaced or does the whole assembly need to be swapped out?
There is some play even with a new one, i would say it is around a 1/8" inch in and out play. The pulley can be replaced, but it is not the pulley at fault. It could possibly be the powersteering pump, however it usually rides in the middle of the in-out travel, the belt alignment keeps it there. Check the other pulleys for endplay when the engine is idling, and then stop it and remove the belt, and see if you can get movement in any of the other pulleys. There is a special tool to remove the pump pulley, and another one to install it. Any auto parts store should have it.
The pulley is press On/Off, but kris is right out of the box there will be about 1/8" in/out play. How much are you seeing. I would look to the idler or tensioner if you are shredding belts.
This was the only pulley that I felt any play in. The idler and tensioner and the other pulleys seemed to be tight and in working order. It probably isn't and more that normal as Kris described though. It must be coming somewhere else, i'll check again when I get a chance.
