C-6 4x2 to c-6 4x4
Hi just wondering if anyone knows if you can remove the tailshaft section of a 4x2 c-6 and use it on a 4x4?I have a 1986 f250 4x4 AOD at and I bought it to plow my driveway but now want to fix it up.Theguy I bought it from changed the trans last year with a used one and the one he put in slips and doesnt shift at all out of 1st.The fluid is contaminated (milky) I changed it once and now its milky again possibly radiator leak I guess but anyhow A guy near me has a rebuilt 4x2 c-6 trans for sale cheap but I dont know if I can use it on a 4x4 thanks Jason

I am no tranny expert, but i know that to change tail shafts requires a complete disassembly, it is an internal thing not and external thing, and if i read correctly you have an aod, which i dont think has the same parts as a c6 anyhow.........you also need to make sure the c6 is the same bellhousing as yours (if you find a 4x4 one), you didnt mention which motor you have, i will assume the small block pattern though (its the only aod pattern i have ever seen)

It may be possible. We were just having a discussion on that swap on an E4OD and Arctic Y Block says it can be done on a C6/C4:
Obviously you will need the short C6 4X4 tailshaft and housing to put on the 4X2 trans.

Stand the tranny on it's bell on a couple of blocks. pull the rear mount and remove the keeper there, than the tail shaft housing. Remove the pan and valve body to get to the other clip on the shaft. pull it up slow as not to move the clutches. Slide the short shaft in. Replace the clip, valve body and pan. Easy as Pie.
