p1316 problems
Recently I have had many problems with my 2000 7.3l which the forum has helped a great deal. The one I cant get rid of is the p1316 code. I have changed out the uvc harness and gasket with new ones, then removed valve cover's to double check connections again and they are fine. I am getting white smoke and the truck misses. I do not have a advanced reader for the codes just using my edge programmer. I have also disconnected the battery and cleared the code but it comes right back.Please help!!

Get an ohm meter (get a digital readout), you can check your glow plugs/injectors by unconnecting the 9 pin connectors at both of the valve covers (near top edge) and use the following info:
GGIICIIGG
G - Glow Plug
I - Injector +
C - Injector -
Ohms between the G and block Ground should be 0.1 - 2.0 ohms.
Ohms between the I and C one at a time if one or more is > 5 ohms, it will point to the side's gasket connector or UVC harness being shorted.
You can get a ohm meter for less than $20.. good investment..
Mine was missing on one cylinder, getting the P1316 and found the problem using this method..In my case it was just a loose connector but it sounds like you have check for that.. But, i would still check the resistance and maybe it will pin point it for ya..

Took the valve covers off today and double checked all the connections everything looks good under there and the gasket and harness are new from international. There was a little oil on the glow plug connector, I wiped it clean but I imagine oil soaks everything under the valve cover.
As far as the buzz test I guess I need a good reader for that, if anyone is near riverside,california and has one I would love to use it.
The white smoke is different than I have noticed before it seems to be in like 1 second burst as if from just one cylinder or something.
I have an ohm meter and will try that tomorrow.The wires appear to be in good shape on top of the motor but they are wrapped in black tape so it is hard to be sure. I also have recently changed the ICP and Cam sensors.
Could it be the brain? Or is there a way to check the wires on top of the motor without unwrapping them?

Checked the ohms today and everything looks great. Still have white smoke so I checked the gpr also and it is working fine. I do have an exhaust leak at the manifold but cant imagine that throwing a 1316 code. If anyone can help let me know I need to find someone that can run a buzz test.

Come ON. The first clue is the white smoke. LOW COMPRESSION or no boost. Is the Map sensor unplugged or the hose knocked off or leaking? That makes alot of cool white smoke and scares the heck out of the freeway. Bad injectors pour fuel and black smoke, or they run lean with no fuel. Also check the fitting on the front of the passenger side exh manifold. I left mine off and had no boost and one heck high temps, and exh leak.

Oh yeah, you can check the whole harness for ohm testing from the main plug behind the drivers side fender well. I found that mine was failing at the connection above the diverside valve cover.

I am saving some money to buy a good reader like autoenginuity but they are a bit pricey. I am using my edge programmer for codes right now. The dealer wants $80 to test it and I can use that towards the reader I need. Until I get one I am trying everyones suggestions which have been very useful.
Can you tell me where the Map sensor is and can it give a 1316 code? Also I only get white smoke when it is cold as if there is a glow plug issue. I get plenty of boost like 24psi with the edge programmer and I havn't checked the compression.

I have the evo, and ill tell ya what, the AE makes the evolutions code reader look like a 2 cent watch. I do not belive the 1316 can be tripped by the MAP since 1316 means IDM codes stored and the MAP goes through the PCM. Something else to possibly check is a loose connection at the IDM?
