I agree with John, I didnt look up the cause of the codes. If you want a cheap read get buddy buddy with a local aamco tranny shop, have a service and casually ask if they can run some buzz testing or contribution test or the keo tests. It would hurt anyway.

White smoke when cold and a miss.....not really that cold in CA so I am hoping you don't have a dead injector whether by signal or the actual unit. My 0.02. A good scan will tell you if that is so. Any other symptoms?

Someone else with a similar problem on the forum a couple of weeks ago was saying that he had some bare wires in the wire bundle that lays on top of the drive side valve cover. I guess there was enough movement from the engine to wear the insulation off a couple of the wires. These are the wires that go to the injectors and glow plugs.. You maybe should take a small mirror and look between the valve cover and bottom side of the wire bundle, right where the factory stopped the red tape protection. You should remove your 4" intake tube to get a better look..

O.K. heres the latest. Thing wont hardly run and misses very badly and now stalls at stop lights. I broke down and bought a A.E. scanner. Heres what I got:

P1316=p1271,72,77,73,74,75, H to L side open
p0605=icm (rom)error
p0476=exhaust pressure control valve range/performance---
p0281,p0284 cylinder 7,8, inj. circuit contribution/balance fault
p1211=inj. Control pres.
C1230=Speed Wheel Sensor Rear Center Input Circuit Failure

Help me please!

Start here

MD1 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P0605
DTC P0605 exists only when there has been an internal failure of the powertrain control module (PCM).
Clear Codes
Rerun Scan Tool Diagnostic Test. "KOEO"
Is DTC P0605 retrieved?

Yes: REPLACE PCM. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

No: System OK. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.

I think the wiring harness's are loose in the valve covers. The p1316 code.
And the rest is the engine parameters are all out of whack because only half the cylinders are doing the work of eight.
My next move would be to remove both valve covers and see what's up. If they are loose, replace the VC gaskets and the wiring harness's, clear the codes and take it from there.

I would also be checking those v.c harness. When my truck pulled it, one of the connectors were off by maybe a 1/4 inch and it was running on one side of the motor.

I have already put on new uvc harness from international then pulled valve covers a second time to double check. How about the contribution test does that mean my injectors are bad? I will clear codes and check the 0605 code tomorrow, can you tell me where the PCM is located?
Thanks Tom

idm

I had almost an identical problem with mine not too long ago. I also replaced both VC gaskets, and harnesses and still had the same problem.

What i would do is test your wiring from the IDM connector inside the fender well to make sure you dont have a short upstream of that connector. If everything checks good on the ohm tester, more than likely it will be a bad idm.

Possible but the reason I mentioned to start with the 605 code is with a flaky PCM giving the 605 code it may not be able to properly interpret the FDCS, EF and CID circuit inputs and not be able to tell the IDM When to fire the proper injector.

If you clear the code and it doesn't return considerit a ghost and move to the IDM and wiring between the PCM and IDM and Idm and valve cover. If it does come back you need a new PCM.

The FDCS is the output that controls the fuel injection timing and controls fuel quantity with the injection pressure regulator (IPR). This signal is sent with the cylinder identification (CID) signal to the IDM which provides power and distributes the proper signal to the appropriate injector.

The IDM provides the EF output signal to the PCM to confirm that proper timing/duration of fuel delivery command signal (FDCS) was received. Additionally, the EF signal is used to send diagnostics of the IDM and injectors (electrical) to the PCM.

IDK if its possible, but could you have maybe but the vc gasket on wrong side. Everything would be screwy if you did that.

I programmed the truck back to stock with my edge. This seems to have got rid of the p0605 code and a few others. Retested without the edge and got this:
KOER contribution test shows 7&8 cylinder fault
Glow plug test successful
KOEO buzz test shows 1,2,3,5 high & low side open (previously was 6 injectors)
I believe the contribution test is my problem. What does it tell me? How can I fix it?
Thanks Tom

Hey Tom.. Have you checked the large connector on top of the drivers side valve cover..? When I disconnected mine it had abit of corrosion on the pins.. I cleaned them all with some electrical conact spray in a can.. Remove the center bolt to disconnect..

Here's the latest. I pulled the valve covers again to check the compression. I have only checked the drivers side so far and found the #8 cylinder to be at 100 psi.
Am I screwed? What should I do next?

If one or more cylinders reads low, squirt approximately one tablespoon of engine oil on top of the pistons in the low-reading cylinders. Repeat the compression pressure check on these cylinders.

Compression Test—Interpreting Compression Readings

If compression improves considerably, piston rings are faulty.

If compression does not improve, valves are sticking or seating incorrectly.

If two adjacent cylinders indicate low compression pressures and squirting oil on each piston does not increase compression, the head gasket may be leaking between cylinders. Engine oil or coolant in cylinders could result from this condition.
