I am going to purchase a EZ wiring harness and instual it in a 66 f100 custom cab. I want to reuse my orginal switches and conectoors. I plan to get new ends and put them on the new harness and then put them in the orginal conectors. I want to crimp and sodder. I was going to get heat shrink and some type of cover. During this time was was planing to do some upgrades as well. I am going to go to duraspark. Delay 2 speed wipers. Underhood light, underdash light, headlight relays, and tralier light hook ups. I am planing on putting the watertite conectors on the turn signals and back at the taillights. On the inside I am also planning on a conector so i can disconnect the dash panel. I also want to do something with orginal steering colum conector. I have a 66 wiring digram and looking over it to try and see how everything will conect. If anyone has any other items I should add while I am at it. Anyone who has instualed one of these have any sujestions on unforseen problems I could run into or other things I need to plan on buying? I plan on new battery cabels and groud straps while I am at it too. Also I am thinking about upgrading to a newer ford Internal regulated alternator. Does anyone know about wiring for these or other items for modifications for. The truck will basically be kind of a daily driver in the summer and fall. Thanks On a side note I plan to chage the guages to after market at some point and change to a volt guage with the switch instead of the amp guage. thanks Also does anyone have a recomadation on a place to buy the harness.

I did a fuse block replacement on my truck 2 weeks ago. One thing I can suggest is to map out how you want all your circuits. That way if you get distracted or have to walk away you can pick it up again. I was going to do an EZ Wire swap myself, I found after researching that my stock wiring was still good. I rewrapped all the harness' throughout the truck. The dash was wrapped with spiral wrap so I can add some things later. I rerouted all my engine compartment inner fender wires to the underside and wrapped those with shrink tubing. I had 40' of 1" shrink tubing that I got from work. If your going to be replacing the battery cables I would also suggest changing the starter solinoid with them. I have an aftermarket set of gauges that I am mounting in a spare dash panel with it's own wiring harness. One idea that comes to mind is swapping the indicator lights to LED's unless you are still planning to use the original speedometer cluster. You can find them at radioshack for $3 per for a 12v system. I picked up a few green, red, and yellow for the various system warnings and such. The water tight connectors your thinking of using may require a special crimping tool so keep that in mind. Some of them cost $50 or more. I used aircraft grade splices with shrink tubing to seal them from the elements. For the harness you can check out ebay. I've found them for $125 at times from some of the site stores. They were the mini fuses though.
Mark have you posted any pics of your fuse block. I'm going to be starting on mine as time allows so I'm following your posts with interest. Ron Francis wiring has a new fuse block that looks good but I haven't checked prices. Its has adjustable fuses I saw it in the latest issue of Classic Trucks.

I have started maping. I downloaded the EZ manual off the net and have been compaire and seeing what all i need to do to convert it to the stock components. If it all goes well maybe a tech artical or a post of what goes to what at least. If the water tite conectors do require special crimpers any other sujestions on types of disconects I could use? I know I will take the truck apart at some time but till then I need to have it function.(so That is why I want disconects now) I thought about trying to remake the stock harness but it is way to scarry under the dash( too much messed up) so that is why I am going for a full harness replacement. Also does anyone know of a program that I can make new wirign digrams out of when I get finished so that what I add and change is more than an word and excel doc.? Also I am open to any more info sujestions or anything else. If someone has already convered to the ez harness and can say this is how the switch is wired, or the head lights etc, let me know. Cause I would like to not mess it up or miss something that I will need to get before I start. On a side note should I replace the turn signal sockets? and the rear taillight sockets? or just replace the little contact inside? thanks
I just installed an ez wiring harnness in my 66 f100. Everything went in smooth, and it looks and works great. I also used my stock plugs. If you follow the directions its almost fool proof. Good luck
I used the ez wiring harness on my 46 chevy and it is a really nice setup and less expensive than the other ones I had looked at. What is really nice is that when you are done everything is neat, new, and well labeled. You also get everything you need if you want to add things like power door locks and power windows etc. You can get the color kit or the black. I went with the black so the wires would be all uniform in color and they are labeled every foot or so down the wires.
You won't be disappointed with ez wiring. I rewired my 71 f100 and it went in no problems. A challenge I ran into was the column wires were colored different than the instruction sheet showed. Those wires come pre-bundled so I dealt with them at the end. Tech support was super helpful, my gremlin was the hazard switch. There is one terminal that two wires shared, that caused my front park light to come when I hit the brake.
Now I'm trying to figure out why my gauges don't work. If it wasn't a holiday, one call to tech support would do it.
My dad rewired this truck 40 years ago after the original harness caught fire. So it is a home made job and I am starting to have problems with it. Like the reverse lights coming on in park and off in reverse etc. But I am not much of an electrician just trying to figure out how hard it is to re wire the truck. thanks
I used the EZ wire 2 years ago on my 66 and it went smooth. I have a detailed color diagram for the turn signal wiring if you want it. I printed it large, and taped it to the windshield when I did mine.
On the wiper switch, get one out of a late 70's or early 80's F series, and make sure to get the module, and the motor from a 79 or older. It all bolts right up in about an hour and works great. That is what I did to mine.
I would love to get a copy of the diagram. I am going to wire the truck soon. I am going to order a new dash and stuff before though so I don't have to change it later. Thanks again and thanks for the headliner pdf I will get it printed as soon as I can find a plotter printer.
Hey Broomfieldbum, could you post that diagram and maybe also how you wired the hazards? Thats my EZ gremlin now too and I know that it'll be very helpful for any future members that go key word searching. Thx.
I thought I had mine correct, but, I had a front park light that would come on with the brakes and both blinkers :-((
I found that there are two wires that come out of the same terminal of the hazard switch one went to a tail light and one went to the front right park light. That caused the front light to be back fed when I hit the brakes. I simply swapped the wires and that solved my problem :-)
I'll try to post a schematic.
I thought I had it all dialed in and when I wired up my hazard switch, I didnt have any brake lights. The real trouble with this sort of troubleshooting is when you change something and forget to change it back before moving on. Pretty hard to eliminate possibilities. I had left my brake switch unhooked while routing wires and it arced and blew the fuse without me knowing it. Then after correcting that, I didnt have any brake lights when my headlights were on. However, it wasnt until a buddy advised me that the brake lights should run through the turn signals, not the tail lights did it all come together. Im not sure why I wired the brake lights to the tail lights but I NEVER would have figured that out on my own.
The most seemingly common knowledge to some is an earth shaking revelation to others.
I would advise that you take this wiring and upgrade in smaller bites. Buy a simple multimeter at sears and learn how to use it. Then install and wire up a internally regulated alternator. These are available on ebay with harness and fuseable link. Great upgrade not expensive and fairly easy to do. Next I'd do the headlight with relays upgrade. Tech article is available here and premade harness is also available. Not complicated! New Battery cables and ground straps along with a new starter relay are also a wise investment. Next I'd do the intermittant wiper upgrade. Now you have some experience, have used your multimeter and are ready to tackle your fuse block. Numerous harnesses are available The EZ harness is likley one of the easiest and least expensive available. I remove the seat and instrument cluster. I'd try to have the TS and hazard figured out in advance. Most of the grief shows up here because the hazard, brakelights and ts all go through the ts switch. Good Luck!
