As some of you may or may not know that I just recently purchased a new/used truck within the past month. Well I can't seem to get the rims clean. I 've tried many different types of mag polish and they clean up some spots nicely but not others. I think the rims had some sort of clear coat thats coming off. I need to know how I can go about correcting this issue. I will add pictures as soon as I figure out how to put them up. lol

sorry to say I don't think there is much you can do with those except paint.
Welcome to the forum......it looks like the finish is gone on those. I'd grind them down and prime and paint. I did a set with some Rustoleum "hammered" paint....in a silver color......came out nice actually......had them on a chebby truck.
Others here might have some different ideas.
Good Luck
I was able to remove the clear coat that was on the rim. Below is my current results. Please note I have them on my mazda board becuase you can upload a higher res image then on yahoo photos. Tell me what you think can be done if any to possably remove that crap.
I strip them Sand problem spot with fine grit . Then go over whole wheel with 0000 steel wool to clean/smooth up . Then use good polish
to make shine. Been doing it for years . I polish them once a month or so hold up fine. You can get one redone but for price I 'd get a after
market rims.

I would send them to my powdercoater. It looks like the original coat has worn off and you are seeing the oxidized aluminum in spots. My guy in Cincinnati would charge me about $75 for a set of four and be better than new.

My $.02,

Doesn't sound like a bad idea other then i cant live without my truck for about a month.
Does anyone know how much a new replacement rim would be or recommend a new set of rims for my truck? Look in the gallery for my truck.
get them sand blasted
will clean them and leave a textured finish
then clear coat with a good acrylic finish
if you have a 20 gal. compressor you can get
a cheap blaster at any tool outlet and do it youself
as time permits and on the truck
if you want to replace jegs has a good selectoin at good prices
I'm still messign with different types of cleaners to see what will work. The way I figure it I can't ruine the rims any more then what they currently are at. I can always A) replace or B) sand blast and repaint or polish. If I find anything that will work ill be sure to update the thread.
I had a set that looked worse than that and I used a week solution of Hydrochloric or muriatic acid I cant remember which one and you dont want to use the wrong one. I remember I cut it to about 3 % solution with distilled water. maybe some one here will know which one works with aluminium.
wear rubber gloves and eye protection. I sprayed it on waited 30 minutes washed them off and they looked like brand new rims. they will have a very fine etched look to them. but it was very uniform and would be easy to Polish if I wanted to but I liked the look.
I want to say dont try what I did above until you know which acid to use and be extreeeeeeeemly careful. those acids are very dangerous when in their concentrated forms. probably 35% will be the strongest you can buy with out a licence but you will need to cut that way down.
the way I found out which one to use is I went to the Zone and was looking a mag wheel cleaners and on the back of one can it said not to use that one on rims with coating because it contained XXXX acid and it would damage or remove the coating. so I bought a can took it home sprayed it on and WOW. so off to buy the XXXX acid and made up my own.
