I find that the newer diesels are getting worse milage across the board (chev, ford, dodge). I had a 93 with the IDI and with some simple engine mods I was getting 24 mpg. My bro-in-law has a 03 6.0 and his milage is around 16 (stock). I have heard from guys around here that they are getting 14 / 15 in their dodges. I think the companies are trying to squeeze out so much hp that they are impacting milage. My old diesel hit around 200 hp when I was done with it and that was more then enough for me.
My 2 cents, with the price of diesel now and the cost of repairing the thing (add $150 for the word DIESEL on all the parts) I won't buy another one. My dream truck is a new F350 with the v-10 and 3.73 gears, putting it right around 20 mph empty (my buddies truck).
I don't have a clue what I get for mileage but I always keep a gas station in site. Can't pull my 5th wheel with a Honda. I do know that it has improved since my intake and plug change.
Hey bchunter do you have any V10's up there? I search used lots on the internet almost daily and they are pretty scarce.
Yeah your right about the diesels. They do have alot more hp and torque then most guys need, but I think alot of people just want more. My dad has a 91 and his got 25 mpg pretty commonly, and he says his 2001 does ok, but not as good as that. Ive considered getting an older one too, but I do like the looks and whatnot of the newer ones.
We have a few v10's but everyone seems hell bent on spending $7000 more to get a diesel. My buddies (4 of them, 1 in a 4x4 van, 1 in a 2wd van, and 1 in a F-250, and 1 in a f-350) that have v10's swear by them. I have also looked at getting a used one and they are hard to find. I went on the ford website and built my dream truck and it came out to $37,000. I compare that to $50 to 60 k for the diesels that are sitting on the lot.
Getting consistant 15/17 in town and 19/21 hwy.Have super chip on HP setting and it gives best results.Wife gets 2/3 mpg better lighter foot 05 SD 6.0 373 rear
37 grand wont even get you a "cheap" new diesel will it?
I doubt it. The build that I did on the site is for a pretty plane jane truck, so I can get it dirty and abuse it and not worry. The engine upgrade to the v10 is $1000 from the 5.4. The engine upgrade to a diesel is $7000 right there, and more if you want the auto tranny. The cheapest new one on our lot is $55000, but they are all crew cabs with some form of bling on them.
The manager of the local dealer told me that you had to have a diesel for 35 years to pay for the upgrade to the diesel engine compared to the v10 in the fuel savings. So basically he figured out that to make up the $7000 through fuel savings alone would take you 35 years. This does not include the cost of repairs to the diesel and maintaince, like $100 oil changes.
Don't get me wrong, I love driving a diesel, I will just never own one again. And as for the price of diesel going sky high, I think you can blame the Duracraps for that. Nice, quiet, car riding diesel that city folk drive cause now they don't mind diesels. They should have drivin my old tractor.
Yeah you have a valid point about the duramax's. I tell you out in the patch, there isnt that many chevs, compared to ford and dodges. Its gotta be those city folks buying them up!
