I am struggling with the same decisions myself. I can get a DI/DO system installed with all the cutting and welding for half the price of the all stainless SI/SO Magnaflow kit. I would end up with aluminumized steel pipes but heck that seems such a deal compared to the Magnaflow kit. Half the piping, half the work, double the price just sounds like someone is gouging people with thier hype.
Ive found a couple on Ebay for about 450 shipped which is a lot better, but still seems high for a SI/SO muffler and a couple pipes, hangars and a tip. Makes it real hard to justify on a cheap XL pickup.
the higher price is because of the better quality (as you stated) cres (stainless) piping, along with the fact that the purchased system is cnc mandrel bent, custom made for your model vehicle including dyno time to verify/prove the most performance/reliability gain. when you take it to an "exhaust shop" all they are doing is bending standard low quality tubing on a regular tubing bender, and making it fit. Is there a huge power/performance difference, maybe, maybe not.
Just so you know what your basing your decision on, there is something to be said for the aftermarket systems, just just " price gouging" .
also, the system on our f150 is extremely easy to install, took me about 1 hour including jacking the truck up and a break along the way.
I installed the flowmaster si/so myself, as i personally hate dual rear exit myself, but unto each their own.
well the guy at the muffler shop said he would do it for $500. i talked him down to $450 for dual exhaust . i decided in the end to go with a catback (im guessing thats with one muffler and two exhaust pipes)

I ran true duals with a magna flow on each going straight out the back, I've had this setup for 2 years great setup. I had Vortex (cherry bomb) mufflers before and the cab noise was too loud.
A siso 3" Flowmaster catback with the 50 series muffler is about $270.00 from Summit...aluminized steel, mandrel bent, easy to install. Save some money and do it yourself...!!!
