Hey all,
I have a 2001 F150 with about 55,000 miles and a manual transmission. It is a 4x4 with the 4.6/8 engine.
I just bought the darn thing and have had several problems. I've been able to fix most of them except two.
With all the snow in the northeast I've been using 4x4 high, naturally, to get around. Everything seems fine when I'm going straight or making very wide turns. But it is giving me a lot of resistance when I try to make sharp turn. It sometimes makes a groaning noise. Does anyone know what this could be? I did a full tune-up when I bought the truck and insomuch changed most of the fluids, including the lubrication for the 4x4 system. As an aside, I recently had to replace the sway bar links after one of the heads of the bolts ripped out of one of the links.
My second problem is with the ignition system. I put in new sparks and it doesn't seem to have a problem in the warm weather. But in the cold it often only seems to partially start before dying. It turns over OK, and I don't have a battery problem. Often I have to keep trying to start it more than a dozen times before it finally starts. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

The IAC (Idle Air Control) valve is probably the starting problem Replace it. I've never made a sharp turn when in 4x4. If the rearend is limited slip, then it is probably trying to bind up,
I gotta tell ya I have a 2001 5.4L 4x4,76,000mls and when locked in 4x4 hi or low, its hard to steer on grass, snow, wet roads,ect..I contribute that to haveing a good 2 wheel lock, seems like the truck goes good in 4x4...my wifes expedition has the auto mode and it steers much better till you hit hi.. Its been like since I bought it new back in 2001, Im not sure of the thumping noise your hearing, it makes a light clunk when shifting the front axle at times, Ive never had any issues outa the norm with the 4x4 or the truck, Ive replaced the oil sending unit, other than that its been rock solid..Its even hard to steer in 2 wheel drive if i cut it hard either way, I can feel the resistance, maybe I need some gear modifer, but since its acted the same since new 20 miles on it when I drove it off the lot..never found it to be an issue...

Why does people not understand that when in 4 wheel drive and making a turn the outside wheel has to travel farther than the inside wheel when BOTH are locked togather.
What is the result? They fight with each other until one loses grip momentairly and catches up. Then it starts all over again. That's the noise and what you feel as a hobble, sprag or whatever it feels like to you..
