when i bolted everything back on the rear, i thought that i leveled the rear correctly but when i was test driving down my drive there is alot of noise that i cannot tell where its coming from. now i know that i need to do my brakes but i think the noise is coming from somewhere else than that. i did not put the bed back on hoping it would help in detecting where its coming from but cannot tell. it just seems to be making a bad rubbing/somewhat grinding noise. could this be from the rear not being level or should i need to worry about something more than that? also when i was doing the rear, the drive shaft ended up coming out of the tranny. figured no big deal and slid it back on... could this be something to cause the noise? thanks in advance
There are a few places the noise can be coming from. The axle bearings, pinion bearing, u-joints, or the carrier bearings. I would venture to say it might be the one of the axle bearings. These do tend to wear out if they aren't lubricated. I can't remember off the top of my head when Ford stopped using the greased axle bearings on the 9 inch if you have one.
The best way to check for bad axle bearings is after a drive, grab ahold of the axle housing next to the backing plate. If you feel any warmth, you'd probably better plan on replacing them.
Another option is to pull the axles and check the bearings for slop and such.
When my wheel bearings went south, it sounded like I had an agressive set of offroad tires out back, those bearings really howled.
