I just paid for my new (to me) '81 F250 4X4 and Im still waiting to get it shipped & I found the VIN decoder on this site I thought for giggles that I'd throw my truck's VIN in there and I encountered something pretty unexpected....It shows the truck as a 4X4 and a F-250 BUT instead of the advertised 460 engine that the dealership has advertised on a few different sites..the VIN showed the 300 I6 engine....starting to worry a little bit since I bought this truck from out of state. what should I do? Has this happened to anyone before?
I used the decoder on my 86 F250 which still has the factory 460 and it showed that I had a 351W.I wouldn't worry about it. If you need to know for sure there are some members here that can Help like Numbersdummy he's great at this stuff
Unless the 460 was swapped in by the previous owner, it's not the original. Starting in 1980, the biggest engine you could get was the 400 up until 1983 and then the factory started to put the 460 in as the big dog engine. So the truck might have had a 300-6 from the factory like the decoder said and somebody just got tired of it.
