my 2000 f350 powerstroke doesnt start right up after sitting overnight (and sometimes for a few hours). i was told that it was from low oil but oil is fine. it starts but will not accelerate then seems like it is running on just a few cylinders and often will die. then out of the blue it catches and runs fine. is there a not return valve that is allowing the fuel to drain out of the injectors causing a air leak? any ideas? thanks
Can you read any fault codes? Remove the fill screw in the top of the High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP) with the engine off after it has been sitting. The oil level should be about a 1/2" from the top. Do you get a SES light?
I have to back clintbonnie on this one. If the oil drains out of your HPOP reservior, you will have a heck of a time getting it to start. I believe there is a check valve in the fill tube that can leak back if it doesn't seat.
Mine does the same but wonder if it might be the glow plug relay. I will check the hpop when I get it back from the tranny shop. The 7.3L injectors run on oil pressure right?

thanks for the replies. i took it to the local ford dealer but they couldnt figure it out so i assume no codes showed up on their test. it is intermittent and does not happen after running for a while. my brother borrowed truck today but will check hpop when i get it back. thanks
Your oil is likely draining out of your HPOP. Check the level via the allen plug on top on the driver side. It should be within 1 inch from the threads. If it is draining out, your check valve is failing or sticking open. Skip all of the GPR stuff unless it is just cold and that could be the problem. No code reader needed to check the HPO level after sitting for a while. No oil=no start and the injectors are driven by oil pressure from the HPOP. The IDM activates/opens the injector and the injector plunger pushes fuel in under high pressure oil.
