I have a 90 Bronco EB AOD/5.0 with 141,000 miles on it. Here is the problem. I drove it from California to Illinois with no problems 6 months ago. In Feb I started to hear a minor "clunking" sound from under the truck. I also felt it too. Then it went away and would only happen once a month. Then last night I started to drive to the gas station and then all the sudden it happened. The clunk sound was back and this time it didn't go away. I nursed my truck back home and then took the front and rear drive shafts off to check the U-joints. Well the front was fine but the rear drive shaft had one bad u-joint. It was the front U-joint (closest to the X-fer case) I replaced it and then went for a test drive. The problem was still there. I noticed that when I drive it in drive (not overdrive) that the problem doesn't happen. My gear indicator on my dash reads. PR(D)D1 So I am assuming the I have just the AOD transmission. Now here is my questions. Has anyone had this problem? Is this a problem with the X-fer case or is it a problem with the Tranny? Please any advise is appreciated.
When exactly does it "clunk"? My 95 4WD, 140K mi. has a clunk that seems to be coming from the transfer case area but only at accel from dead stop or just as you come to a dead stop. I can minimize or eliminate the clunk by very easy accel or braking. My U joints are O.K.
Dealer said it's normal wear in the xfer case and besides replacing the xfer case there's nothing to be done about it. Don't know if I trust that diagnosis. There's a NHTSA Technical Service Bulletin (WWW.NHTSA.DOT.GOV), # SB049546, FORD TSB# 962018, dated SEP 1996 entitled: Low TRANS fluid level &/or engagement concerns which may speak to your/our problem.
Hey guys I don't konw if you clunking noise is like a hard clunk or kind of thud. I was having a thud sound like you are having qwadsworth and read in here a couple of forms and guys told me to take the drive shaft off and grease the slip yoke (I think that is the corrct name for it). They said that the grease in there dries out in there and there isn't any lub. So I tried it. I didn't think that was going to help but to my amazement it did. No my thud noise is gone. Now if it's a loud clunking noise I don't know. Just thought I would share that with you guys.
