One reason you don't see a lot of people telling you the difference in mileage is most of us have had only one ratio, so it's hard to compare. I get about 11mpg, sometimes more, sometimes less. I have the 4.30.

I have a 2005 Crew Cab, short box, 4x4.

My statesments are based on the numerous mpg threads and polls. In polls it has been stated over and over that the V8 and V10 get nearly identical mileage. Same for the 3.73 and 4.30.

The 3.73 rear IS NOT available on this truck. The KR package comes std with 4.10LS anyway..I wouldn't worry about getting the optional 4.30's...you wont need it.

If you're getting a 4x4 it's something like $300 more for the 4.30 IIRC. You'll never be able to regear one axle, let alone both for $300. Also, it used to be the 4.30 ratio came with a Super60 front axle, or so it would seem based on the builders guide. This was the case in 2005.

true, but he says he wants better gas mileage and he doesn't tow 95% of the time...sounds like 4.10's are more than enough for him.

thx to all for their opinions - dealer not much help - they sell almost all psd

Fomocofan,

My first thought was in regard to hunting. For me, my hunting rig needs the 4.3 (but then again, my hunting spots aren't in flat areas so I want more crawl ratio), second was the fact he'd tow 11 or 12k lbs up to twice a month. I don't *know* that 4.3 will get worse mileage, but it may. Sounds like the 4.1 will do just fine though, just a difference of opinion I guess.

My truck got better mileage over 70mph than under, so 4.30 *may* get better mileage.

Ace, I'd love to drive over 70 and get better mileage! Curiously, my manual does not even list a 4:10 gear for the 6.8L engine, only the 5.4L. If there's not really any noticable gas mileage difference the only true cost is the 4:30 gear swap itself. To save money I'd like to buy the gears myself and have a reputable shop install them. Are there other items that should be included or considered in this venture?

There is a difference in mileage from 4.10 to 4.30. your rpm's will be higher at the same speed with the 4.30's and of course more rpm's mean more fuel!!

Look through all the MPG polls and threads, there isnt a difference. Just like there isnt a differnece bwtween the V8 and V10.

You honestly cannot go by mpg reports of people who drive different trucks with different accessories in different climates and say they get the same mileage as the other guy...

If you had two identical trucks with the only thing different being the gears, one would get better mileage..it is pure math!

i have owned about every combination of Ford trucks as there are and I know there is a wide difference in them.

i have seen these MPG polls..and I see anywhere from 4 mpg to 16 mpg...how can you say they are all the same??

if this truck follows the physics of other vehicles (which i am sure it does) a 4.1 will use less gas at 70mph (non towing). how much we probably will never know. it may be .1mpg or 2mpg. i bet it is somewhere in between. probably under 1 but when you only get 12-14 on the highway 1 mpg is a pretty high percentage.

that also depends on which two vehicles you are comparing...so often here on these boards you might here a guy with a 2000 v10 reg cab 2x4 with a man trans saying he gets 15 mpg with his 3.73 rear...and then you have a 2005 v10 dually Crew Cab with auto, 4x4 and 4.30 gears getting 9 mpg

there are too many variables to listen to these boards for "accurate" comparisons...

I don't think that's true. I think it depends on the "sweet spot". I was very surprised to start calculating my mileage more accurately and see better mileage at a higher speed/rpm. I don't know why. A very heavy truck will probably have better mileage with 4.30 than with 2.80 or some other gearing that will have the RPMs "too low".
