can i safely tow my 18ft camper(not a fifth wheel)4500 lbs and my 20 ft boat 2900lbs one behind another with my 99 f-350 crw cab 4+4 8ft bed and is it legal in missouri without a fiver?
Being this would be a double trailer I wouldn't think it would be wise. If one got swaying from a cross wind then the second would just be twice as bad for sway and disaster.
I have a couple of friends that tow this way, but thier boat is not that big. I pull mine with a fiver without problems. I would use an equalizer hitch.
A little off topic but yesterday I pulled home a 70 CS on a two axle trailer (2,000# U-Haul) with a Landrover Discovery. Above 56 mph on concrete rain grooved roads it wanted to fishtail me, drop to 53 all's well. Longest 86 mile trip I will never repeat.
It was a no go with the bolt on bumper on the 68 CS thru U-Haul here in Cali.
I know this is an old thread but I have to sound off anyway. On the triple tow thing, I would put some sort of brakes on the Boat just because you should have them anyway. In this situation you may not have to worry about it. The TT brakes can be adjusted to compensate for the boat. The real situation is not the weight dist hitch either. If your trailer sits on the truck well with out it why would a second trailer effect it? The toung weight should actually get lighter with the tounge weight of the Boat pulling down on the back of the TT. The only thing I would check is the mount of the receiver hitch mounted to the TT. Are you sure it is strong enough to haul your boat plus 10-15% safety margin? And the main thing is get the sway control between the truck and trailer and between the TT and Boat. Make sure the tounge weights are right too. YOU DO NOT WAN TO FIGHT CROSS WINDS AND MIS LOADED TRAILERS TOGETHER IN A TANDEM HAUL. I have done it before but in WA they wont let us do.
it. I have a 99F250 SD EX cab short bed and i haul an 18'TT at 5K lbs and 19' searay at 3500 LBS.
I agree with everything in Marty's reply except for lightening the tongue weight on the TT. More tongue wt. helps prevent sway. As Marty stated cross winds are the biggest problem because any sway of the TT is amplified in the boat trailer. I triple tow with a 30ft 5er (10,400lbs) and pull a 19ft 3500lb boat with tandom axles and surge brakes. The more stopping power the better! This rig is about 6 feet over limit, but have never been stopped in Texas, Okla, or Arkansas. Also, I found it necessary to make sure the boat is securely tied to it's trailer due to the amplified up and down action from the 5er trailer to boat hitch. I might also mention that you must plan your refueling, in town turning, parking lots, dead end streets, boat launches, camp ground parking, etc.
