I need some help for a buddy

I have a friend that has an F350 SC 4X4 7.3 AT production was 9/98 if that matters. 100K miles. he started it up and after a few minutes he said it made a click and shut off. would not restart. he had a friend with a scanner which was giving him unusual info. had rpm's while cranking so I didn't think it was the cps. his friend with the scanner hit the pcm a couple times with his hand and then the truck started and seems to be running fine. he is about to have his friend stick a new pcm in. does this sound right to you? any other ideas or things to check? thanks for any help you can give.

if he has any chip make sure it aint lose.

I second the chip idea if that chip comes loose, the pcm shuts down. Push it back in, and ur in business.

if it does not have an aftermarket chip, does it have an OE chip that may be loose? I told him that taking a running truck to the dealer and asking for them to find a problem is crazy. you might as well just give them your wallet.
