I know I saw this somewhere and I thought I book marked it, but now I can't find it. Anyone have the way to switch the autolock hubs off so I can get 2WD low without locking in the front hubs. Thanks!
I remember seeing that too, but I think it was a guy that swapped out his auto lockers for a set of Warn (?) or something and made them manual's. Then, just leave the front unlocked and switch to 4 lo....front won't engage if not locked in.
I could be wrong, maybe it was something else you're thinking of. I just saw that within the past week or 2. Makes me want to swap my auto's out so I can get 2wd low - great for crawling the boat around the lot!
When I push my boat up in to the drive on the side of my house and I have the camper on my truck, its very hard on the tranny. I would like to be able to engage the transfer case without the front hubs so I'm not binding up the front axle on the concrete.
Fuse....maybe there is one that actuates the hubs. Disable that and your hubs wont engage right?...I dont know much about this 4x4 system..haha can you tell? lol
But hey, you're trying. I have searched everything too, I'm so mad I can't find where I saw that. It was a complete write-up, pictures of the exact wires to tap in to and everything. You know it was like when I put something where I'll never forget where I put it and then I forget where I put it.
if you track it down, I'd be intersted in checking it out too. It would be great for moving stuff around my yard. I planned on swapping out my front hubs for a set of manuals at some point, but sounds like ya got a cool gadget there. I'll try searching over the weekend when I have some time - if I come up with anything I'll let ya know.
OK, well here's what I can tell you.
Go to your local VW dealer and get a secondary air Combi-Valve control relay, part number: 191.906.283A.
It's a vacuum control solinoid that has two ports on it, in and out and a two pin electrical port. $9.00.
Purchase the parts needed to construct the electrical plug as well. A fuel injector repair kit for a 1990 Vanagon will work perfectly..
Splice it into the hoses that go to the front wheels using whatever means necessary. You don't want to cut off the vacuum control to the transfer case so splice into the vacuum lines downstream of the transfer case.
Install the relay in a convenient location and wire it into a switch inside the cabin at the location of your choice.
If you power the relay it opens, you have 4X4. Leave it off = no vacuum to the front hubs, no 4X4, but with your ESOF on you will have low range when needed.
Finally found this. http://www.themustangshop.com/00truck_2wdlow.cfm
I know this isn't the original one that I saw, but I think I can get it from here. I like the way he used the little switches and lights right on the ESOF panel. I have a 2002, I'm hoping the wiring is the same. I haven't looked yet.
