Changed CPS/P Steering Fluid Leak?

I changed my first CPS last Sunday when my son took the truck out of town approx 50 miles and called me and said he could not get the truck to run after restarting it. Thanks to this forum I had ordered a spare and drove to where he was and replaced it and truck runs great. My question is whether thre power steering fluid could possilby push out through the cap when he had to steer the truck w/o the engine running ? We noticed fluid on the fenderwell and on the top of the filler cap but the fluid was not low. Again thanks to this forum I cannot inmagine how much it may have cost me to get the truck running again in another town wothout my knowledge of the "failing CPS". Replacement CPS is already on its way from E-Bay.

I had the same thing happen to me when I had a cps failure. I don't know for sure but i assumed the same thing you did. I refilled the p/s pump and have not had any more leaks.I think I read something about p/s system and brakes having a common system.Maybe stopping the truck while turning the wheel popped the lid loose. Like i said i'm not an expert and i'm not positive about any of this

I've experienced the same thing with the reservoir. When I've had to turn or brake without engine power, there seems to be an extreme buildup of pressure which will either blow out the little hole on top of the cap,or just blow the cap off (in my case). Either way, my frame gets a nice ATF bath.
