Yes take bottom column cover off and check all bolts/screws. If still loose these shift shafts are know for wearing trough and breaking . Good news is they are easy to fix . The latter sounds like it might be your problem . keep us posted.

On my '95 there are two star head bolts on the bottom side of the column. Heads are angled down and towards the firewall. Gotta be real bendy to look at them. Tighten them up and everything worked fine for me. They come a little loose every now and then. Otherwise, it's those shafts and bushings inside the column.
