No Spark

Hey,

I have a 1995 Ford F-150 XL, straight cab, long bed, 300 I-6, Borg Warner 5spd, Borg warner x-fer case.

I have no spark sometimes, but at others it works. I have replaced my coil, entire distributor including cap and buttion, plug wires, plugs, battery, altinator, and Ignition control modual.

It will start fine when it's cool, but when it's warm it doesn't want to start 33% of the time. It just wants to turn over, but never accually fire up. It has cost me money sevral times by not having a delivery (cattle) done by a certain time, and I am looking at loosing my job over this.

If it weren't for the fact that I've done all that PLUS new tires (all 4), a new rim, starter, powersteering pump, both upper and lower balljoints on both sides, u-joints on front, brakes all the way around, emergency brake peddle assembly, and a clutch, I would have already traded this peice a **** in on a new F-150 long bed 4x4 with a 5.4L triton in it.

Thanks for any help in advance, I just need to get her fixed. She still has alot of life left in her even with 418k miles on her. Yes 418k miles and the compression test still shows up a 110lbs! And yes, I put every single last mile on her since I bought her new in 1994. But I bet I can make it to 500k before I rebuild her. She doesn't smoke or anything, just a mild valve cover leak.

Just help me get her running fellas!

So you replaced the complete distributor?

If not did you replace the pickup coil.

Your failure description sure sounds like either the pickup coil
or the TFI module which you say you already replaced.

Just a side note, you probably have a Mazda 5 speed M5R2 Trans.

You need to do some checks when you have no spark. Get a test light if you do not have one. Have someone crank the engine and put the test light on the + (POS) side of the coil. Make sure you have power here while cranking and in the on position of the key.
The - (neg-tach) side of the coil should flash while cranking.

You might want check Fuse "U" (the Maxi-Fuse closest to the engine in the engine compartment fuse box) and the socket for it.

Let us know what you find.

The pick-up coil is in the distributor? If so it's new. Is the TFI modual on the fender apron in the heat sink? If so, that's new too!

I might have the mazda transmission... I have L in the upper left cornor, then 1-5 like normal, and R in the bottom right cornor. So really it's a 6 speed.

The truck hasn't acted up yet today, so I can't check it out. The fuses look okay... That was the first thing I checked before I dumped all the money into the ignition system.

I had 3 blown fuses, but hey, I got my heater blower working and my dash lights on so at least it fixed something.

THanks for the help guys... I hope it acts up soon (as in today on my day off) or it don't act up ever again... Thanks guys..

John

Are you doing all the work your self?

If not sometimes mechanics will tell you they replaced stuff but really
didn't.

Yes the pickup is inside the distributor.

Does the no spark only occur during startup?

While driving does the engine ever stall and when you try to restart
you get no spark?

When the engine is running have you moved/wiggled the connectors
at the distributor and TFI module?

3 blown fuses is not a good sign.

Yea, I will never pay somebody $50/hr to do work I can do in the same amount of time. If I made $50/hr, then I'd maybe consider it. I get discounts from Ford because my brother works there as a parts manager.

Yes, I replaced the entire distributor, it's still doing it!

F150XLT:

Are you doing all the work your self? / Yes.

Does the no spark only occur during startup? /yes, but not always. If it sits over night it has never had a problem starting.

While driving does the engine ever stall and when you try to restart
you get no spark? / It's only stalled once, and I didn't check for spark, I think I just ran out of gas.

When the engine is running have you moved/wiggled the connectors
at the distributor and TFI module? / Yes, I tried that yesterday, because I was checking for loose connections that may be the issue, but she kept on running.

She hasn't acted up at all today. I hope she doesn't tomarrow either.

You guys were right!!! It acted up about 2 hours ago, and my BRAND NEW motorcraft distributor was defective (bad pick-up coil)... Thankfully Ford had another in stock and swaped my 6 day old distributor no difficulties at all.

Thanks guys!
