I'm going to take a look at a 75 stakebead this week... Just found it on Craigslist, calling the guy tomorrow to go check it out. I looked at the one picture it has, and I think it's a dually, but only tomorrow will tell...
Thankfully, I'm good with the FE and 335 motors, so I'll dig up any problems fast. I'm going to crawl through and inspect every inch of that rig, have my full box too, compression tester, timing light, vacuum guage, etc, etc...
They're asking $700, but I'll see how she's doing and try to get them down to $550-600. I'm not too worried, I'll make the money back in dump runs... It's currently registered, and I figure if it poops out on me, I'll swap the cab to my 79's frame, and be smog free! And just sell all the other parts... http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/car/292562394.html
It looks to be an F-350! Look to see if it is a Dana 70 or 60. The front wheel in the picture is a dual-type wheel and the rear does appear to be duals. I think they were still using split rims in '76 - I know that they were in my friend's '74. (These should still be usable on a CA truck and new replacements are available, as well as a lot of used ones.) Probably a NP-435 (Aluminum top cover) or a T-18/T-19. Post back what you find out - these are hard-working trucks, with a 10,000 GVW. The price does seem low for the description, so check it out carefully.
(Side-note for CA: Check out the registration and see what weight fee category it is in, as that is extra $$$ EVERY year. My '68 F-350 was "grandfathered" in as a regular pickup, but these F-350's could have gone either way when they changed the fee schedule a few years back.)
Didn't get to check her out today. Waiting to see if a job offer takes off or not...
No extra work = No $$ = No stakebead. I should probably just avoid spending the $$. But I am really temped to at least go check it out...
How frustrating...
I'm 2,600 miles away or I'd volunteer to go with you to look it over. I should probably point out that a one-ton is more expensive to work on than a half-ton. You need to have a lot of stuff to haul if you want to keep it happy.
Haha, well so much for THAT. Just sent the guy an email to let him know I wouldn't be able to come and check it out today, and he informed me he just sold it. Oh well...
I had a 76 f-350 a few yrs. back, real nice old truck. It was a short wheelbase flatbed also, with 390 and 4spd. Had 16.5 rims, kept it a couple yrs. and cut and sold firewood ,hauling just over a cord per load and the 390 did a great job.
I thought 77 was the smog cut off? And 76 was smog free? Eh, shows what I know...
Oh well, I've kind of realized if I switch to an older body on my frame, I'll go for a 1960 or some OLD ride around that period. Unless of course I can find a 73-75 cab for cheap...
