I have just became the proud owner of a pristine 1972 F-250 4x4.
What I did not get is any door keys.
I traded a couple of junkers to a local car-lot for this truck---no money involved---, so I figure my chances of the dealer tracking down the previous owner and convincing him to even make a feeble attempt at finding a key will be a waste of my breath.
SO, what are some good options??
The outside part of the key-hole looks just like every Ford I ever saw, from the early sixties to the mid-nineties.
What year models can I swap locks with??
How costly is having a lock-smith make a key, providing it is even possible??
pull the driver side door lock tumbler assembly out. might take 10 to 15 minutes and take it to a locksmith. the key code is stamped on the outside of the tumbler. they can cut a key with that number. for the price of the keys.
i bought a key blank and stuck in the key slot and wiggled it side to side like your trying to unlock or lock it .pull the key out itll have some lil nicks in it use a triandle file and file those nicks down to make the key groves. it might take ya a while but it works.you can also take the umblers apart and retumble that lock so it matches your ignition key. i have 1 key for 3 trucks plus spares.remember ford only uses one side of the double sided key
I agree completely with cammer on this problem the way to solve it is. as he said:
"Pull the lock cylinder out of your pass side door, and if your lock cyls are original, the number stamped in the top is the code to punch a replacement keys using Curtis key System."

Yeah, tried that; the "offset" of the key-shank is opposite.
Many good suggestions already here and I am thankful for every one.
There are five trucks sitting here, two Fords, one Chevy, one Dodge, and a Jeep; what would be way cool is if one key worked for all of them, doors, ignitions, tool-boxes, one key do it all.
