IFS Mudder

whadaya think? '80 F150 ('70 429 450hp) C6 NP208 3:00.
want 33"s, 4" lift. I think its driveable, low range could be good....?
Maybe 4:10s? Have '76 HiBoy 390, 4:56s crane front (or sumpn) all the torque in the world, but gear holds it back. Want spin fast, ride smoothe.

I am not really sure of the question???? Are you building an 80 1/2 ton? Where does the 76 F250 fit in?
If you build the 80, then even with little tires (33") with that type of expected horsepower, that 9" rear axle is gonna need some help. ( i think the 80 had a 9"???) The TTB (not ifs, I know picky picky) will probably be the first to break. That front axle should just not be expeced to last under mud conditions with 450 hp.

if you ran that setup with 33's and the 390 you'd have a nice setup. however you put the 429 in even with 33's your weak links will be the axles and the 208.

sounds like a decent platform if you have axles for it. if not i'd shop around a lil before puttin the time and effort in

axles?

thats exactly what I figured, axles being weak link. does anyone know where to look for an axle upgrade without haveing to go to a solid axle? my theory is to get tires spinning real fast, real quick and have the power to not bog down in the penut butter. I only mentioned the '76 for the sake of everyone who would tell me to get an older solid axle truck,I have one...the '80 is just a toy that is being built because I have all the stuff laying around. I was thinking if a guy cut the long side of the front axle and put a cv type joint in the place of that one wimpy little u joint, two joints should handle more torque and the axle would be shorter. Its getting done one way or the other, ideas and advice welcome.

Although creative, that cv idea is still not so good.
Still to many moving parts, and less reliabilty than a solid axle. That spinning really fast theory will only work until a tire gets some traction, the faster you spin the drivetrain, the faster it snaps when it finds traction. An axle has a better chance of survival from slow moving steady torque, rather than a fast moving "shock" that immediately loads the drivetrain. Most breaks occur when traction is lost, and regained while under power. A good driver knows when to get off of the skinny pedal when this happens. Tough to do at 6000 rpm.
Why not put that 429 in the highboy? It does not take too much to do a SAS, seems like you have all of the stuff, but why not build the highboy. It is already a stout combo. With a big powerplant, you would have the makins of one bad truck.
