So I usually end up with my truck idling about one hour a day during the week. I'd like to figure how much fuel I use idling so I get a more accurate fuel milage number.
I fill top off both tanks every other Friday (check the tires and fluids too) This Friday I put 35 gallons in it and drove a total of 338 miles. About 9.6 MPG. Surely What would that MPG number be if you figured in the 10 hours of idle time?
With variations in fuel blends, timing settings, injector differences, fuel pump settings and several other variables, that would be hard to come up with a number that worked on different trucks that are in different geographic locations.
I drop about 2.5 to 3 MPG when we change from summer fuel to winter fuel here locally. Our winter fuel is blended for slightly below zero.
I'm runnng B20 from Whole-Energy with a double dose of Diesel Kleen (just started running it)
The truck is an 86 6.9 tuned for an 088 ATS turbo kit, but the turbo is currently not installed.
If you're running B20 you can stop adding the Diesel Kleen. 20% bio will do more to clean your fuel system than the double-dose of Diesel Kleen. Running both probably won't hurt anything, but its a waste IMO.
As for the mileage, 9.6 mpg seems awefully low. I drove 450 miles and got 16.25 mpg on my last fillup (27.7 gallons). Are you driving it like a hot-rod? I've been driving mine pretty easy just to see how good of mileage I can get out of it. Though it is hard when the engine/exhaust sounds so darned good
I've been taking it pretty easy on the truck lately. Just enough throttle to get up to speed, 50-55MPH on the highway. I only went full throttle 2-3 times between fill ups.
It is a C6 with 4.10's. The tach sensor is dead so I don't know what RPM its at at highway speeds.
Thats why I'm curious how much fuel I might be using when it is idling.
Due to having a 3-1/2 month old kid I need all the sleep I can get and usually take a nap when I get to work in the morning, the truck idles for about an hour when I nap. Thats 5 hours a week.
I drive a little less than half highway and the rest is city driving.
The best I have gotten was 13.5 with the VRV bypassed running #2 with no additives.
With the turbo IP & injectors, you might be running a little rich to begin with.
To increase MPG's on these IDI's are, air intake mod & free flowing exhaust system are a must....and see about fixing that tach & keep the RPM's under 2300
maybe not with a c6 dave lotta slippage depending on the convertor
to answer the question, you burn about a gallon an hour idling.
I am not too concerned with fuel usage of idling.... I do think it's a bad idea engine health wise tho.
alot of junk gets built up in a not hot enough motor... plus dilution of the motor oil.
as far as milage, IP timing is a big one. I would also check the wheels.... a dragging brake can hurt milage.
Well, if I use a gallon an hour then putting 35 gallons in after 338 miles of driving and 10 hours if idling I'm looking at roughly 13.5 MPG. Much better.
I understand the slippage, but 51 MPH would be his highest possible speed with no slippage at all.
Driving 61 MPH on the interstate here is slow enough to be a road hazard.
It will also make you feel you are about to be run over by several semi's at once.
