I just purchased a 91 E250 econoline with a 4.9l 3 speed auto. It has the dual tank option. The gas guage stays in the empty position on both tanks. Any thoughts on where to start?
On both tanks, I think you have a ground problem. It's possible both sending units are shot, I'd talk to the previous owner to see if they went out together or seperately.
I would get under the van and see which gas tank wiring is easiest to get to. After you choose the front or rear tank, unplug the wiring and find a darkblue/yellow on the front tank, or a yellow/lightblue on the rear tank. Turn the keyswitch to run and select the proper tank. While someone is watching the fuel gauge, take a short wire and touch it to one of the wires above, and touch the other end to a good ground on the frame. The gauge should swing full scale one direction. Then take the wire off ground, and let it hang in the air. The gauge should swing full scale the opposite direction.
If the above test works, then the gauge, wiring, and switch are good, and there is something wrong with the sending unit in the tank.
If you can get to both tanks, you can do the above test for both with the switch set in the proper position.
