2001 Ranger Transmission Problem
I have read numerous posts after doing a search as to what may be cause of this problem and it seems that it may be caused by either a bad VSS (speed sensor) or a blown valve body gasket. The TSB I read in one post doesn't specifically mention slow 1st to 2nd shifts so I thought I would post and try to get some ideas as to what may be causing the problem or at least try to get some hints on troubleshooting the problem in order to narrow things down. The posts also seem to hint that the flashing overdrive light might also be an error code indicator as well.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There are a number of TSB's on this subject but it seems to center around the speed sensor or gasket problem. I've read where your speedo will act up if the speed sensor is bad. I can't verify that but maybe someone else can shed some light on it. Please let us know what you come up with for a solution.
The truck is a 4x2. The transmission fluid is flushed annually. The speedometer and cruise control still function properly and the ABS light has not been flashing. Also engine braking still occurs when manually shifting the transmission down to 1st gear. (The TSB notes that engine braking doesn't occur in first gear.)
I'm going to try to obtain the codes from the computer this weekend and maybe something useful will come up.
Any additional ideas or thoughts are welcome.

also, pulling codes will not help, because they will all lead to a bad tranny, and i can almost assure you that your tranny is fine, just needs a little work
