So, I made my account originally in early 01 and bought a couple of things that year, then didn't buy anything until this Monday. As the story goes, I get home today and find I've got five spam mails from chinese ebay sellers peddling electronics and then 3 messages from other ebayers whom are selling stuff that the person who hacked into my account, contacted about their sales... and finally an email from Ebay themselves, saying it appeared my account had been compromised and to follow the instructions to regain access to my account.
Well, since ebay changed my password, I can't login. Their instructions are to try to login and hit the 'forgot password' link and enter my personal info but it appears that the hacker changed that info so I can't even do that.
I emailed Ebay and they responded, calling me "Josie"... WTF?
It appears I'll have to give up a 6 year old account because I made 1 purchase and subsequently got hacked.
sounds about right ...my daddy got a email sayin he bought a $600 wrist watch ...thats some bull crap ...because he want even buy a $30 watch at walmart ...so we just quit usin Ebay ...then his company tried to buy a bobcat (machine) and they told the seller all they had was $2000 right now ..and they told him they could have it for that ...and come to find it out they had jipped a bunch of other people with the same item ..and Ebay saif they couldnt do nuttin about it ...EBAY IS USELESS !!!!
I won't buy anything unless I can use paypal. That's where the security is. You pay them and they pay the seller. The seller never gets your info besides the shipping addresses and paypal will back you up if you get scammed on something.
Yes, the email regarding my password reset was from ebay. They referred to me by my full name and username. Strange that 5 hours later they are calling me Josie... Don't know where that came from.
I am **** about my info on any site. Especialy passwords and credit cards. I generaly use a serverly long password which contains a alpha and numeric combonation and nothing resembling a word or combo of words. Each site is always a differnt password. Which I never, ever have my computer store any. It makes it a pain to type them out but better then the alternitive.
With EBAY a simulare thing happened to a buddy and he was left in your shoes. Hacker 1 buddy 0. He lost control of it and every email back to him used a differnt name. when he did finally get control he had so much negitive feed back he deleted it and started fresh. I kept telling him to have ebay just delete the account and start over. Because in the end it isn't worth the fight when you end up with a ton of negitive feedback from a hacked account. Sellers will be leary about selling to you because of it. It sucks to start all over again, but we do it everyday when we wake up anyways. hope you get everything straightened out!
open all the emails. DO NOT click on any links. i think it is too late for this step though, since they already have your password. once the email is open, forward it to spoof@ ebay.com.
the " official" email you got form ebay was a phishing email to get your account name and password.
the only way to access ebay is by typing ebay.com into your address bar, and then proceeding from there. even ebay tells you to never try to access their site from an email redirector link.
Like tjc says, someone is phishing looking for your info. I keep sending things to spoof at ebay and paypal. A lot of the phishing is done automatically.
there have been days when i get 10-15 phishing emails in 10 minutes that are supposedly from ebay, and are all from different people.
if you know what to look for, you can actually see the email address where it originated from.
Yep most likely a phishing scam. There probably never was any account activity, they just made it up. I almost got nailed by that once as I recieved an e-mail from paypal saying that my purchase of a cell phone had went through. At the bottom of the email there was a link that said click here if you did not make this purchase. After you clicked there it went to the paypal login screen. You put in your paypal login and password and then it took you to a screen that asked for your address, credit card number and a bunch of other stuff. I got to thinking why does paypal need this, they already have it. That's when I realized that the site address at the top was something really crazy and not paypal.com. I quickly closed out of IE and went to a different computer and logged into my paypal account for real and changed my password. I contacted Paypal and told them about it all. They said it was a very popular scam and that if I ever go to thier page from a link in thier emails to double check the web address before entering anything.
I don't see how it could be phishing since the person was using my account several hours before I was notified by
EBAY about it... not to mention the email was from EBAY, and trying to get my account info would be moot, since they were already in my account.
it may have looked like it was from ebay, but if you click on properties, you will see the sender is listed as ebay, but the return path and sender is something like thebigphish @uk.jerk
If you still believe the emails are coming from ebay, just forward one "back" to them & ask for verification....I'm 99% sure they will tell you it is phishing. NEVER NEVER log on to ebay via a link in an email, and never give out your password (ebay will never ask you for it). One hacker may have access to your account & info, but there evidently are others still trying.
