Question 96 running rich

I got an interceptor gauge for my 96 F150 with a 351W. I pulled a codde that says system running rich. I have had bad idling surges also where she revs down and splutters like shes gonna die then back to normal. Could the rich running cause this and how do I fix this problem.
Thanks, Shane

The code I got was P0172. When I got in touch with Aero force they told me this code meant system was running rich. When you say check air cleaner is this the air filter and by plugs, is this refering to spark plugs? If this is the case, summit offer a tune up kit with spark plugs, wires etc, and I might get this. It sounds like a good deal, anyone know about it????

do not buy that, it is overkill and overpriced.

do not go to autozone either.

first, check air filter and replace it if it looks dirty.

second, remove one spark plug and see if it is fouled.

if you do replace plugs use motorcraft resistor plugs, no platinum anything.

do baby steps, not throwing parts that you do not need at truck ***** nilly.

soak plugs with some rust penetrant before removal.

do not break any off.

if in doubt use a shop, but you supply the plugs.

get a manual if you do not have one.

Thanks for info, I have a K&N air charger filter with about 5000 miles on it so thats ok. Why not platinum plugs?

Thanks, Shane

are you sure that you oiled the filter correctly?

regardless, pull it out and look at it.

no platinums because you do not need them, these trucks like the good old stuff.

if you get wires ger motorcraft.

if you need a cap/rotor get motorcraft.

i will bet your air filter is the problem and than the plugs fouled up because of lack of air.

K&N's are oiled when you get them if you bought a new one.....You just plunk it in and enjoy it for the first 100k...or so.......then you might have to clean and re-oil.

There is another thread about running rich with a bunch of other suggestions too....look up the page.......it's titled "oxygen sensor" I think
Good Luck

depending on where you live the element should be cleaned way before 100,000 miles.

that is just propaganda advertising.
