we have a tranny flush machine at work that has dextron III in it I would like to use to flush the tranny in my 97 psd. How many people are runing dex III in there e4od and are there any adverse efects of using it?
I'm not sure about this, but from what i've seen we're suppose to use that mercron stuff.... I'm not sure... I really just wanted to point out the rhyme u made! =D
I don't recommend the use of tranny flush machines at all. I hate them things! I have had to rebuild way too many transmissions after using one. Especially the ones that backflush! All I can figure is they dislodge junk hidden in the cooler and other places and cause trouble.
It's best just to pull the pan and change the filter and fluid. Then install an inline filter with a magnet on the outlet side of the cooler. Wix makes a good one.
Ford has discontinued use of the dex3 mercon stuff and is using mercon 5 on everything pretty much now. I don't work there anymore but I went and talked to the new transmission mechanic there and the foreman and they recommend merc 5 in all transmissions now. Even the old ones.
FWIW, I had been running it in my C-6 that I rebuilt and put in my 91 4x4 f150. That trans went about 200,000 miles in a 1980 bronco that I junked and after I rebuilt it it went over 400,000 miles in my f-150 with never a problem running merc-5. It sure sucked a lot of gas though! I junked the AOT it came with for that C6 after haveing to rebuild it too many times.
I totally agree with m14dan. Do you just change the oil in your engine and leave the same filter on it??
Drop the pan, get a new filter and put the right oil in it mercon or mercon V...or pay $3000 fro a rebuild. These trannys are the weak link in a great drive train. Take care of it and you won't need to walk home
