I just hate the thought of our questionable gender Govonor getting $0.26 per gallon of my hard earned money to squander on college educations & free health care for illegal immigrants, I just want to drive my diesels in peace! (pardon my soapbox).
Here in Michigan - the dyed fuel can be ordered from my supplier as high sulfur, LSD, ULSD. As far as getting they dye out. I haven't seen or heard of any way to do it. Even if you put some into a tank, It will leave a trace for the next 5 tank fulls or more. It really stains the inside of the fuel system.
Well, if it does leave a trace, the Kentucky plant has been (I don't know if they always have) shipping 2008s with red fuel in them... so atleast you have an excuse if there are traces of dye in your 2008 SuperDuty fuel system...
Hi, I am new to the board and also just purchased a 2008 6.4 litre, Lariat crew cab.
My Ford dealership sales people failed to inform me that farm (dyed ) fuel cannot be ran in the 6.4 litre. I called my fuel supplier and he informed me that all diesel is low sulfur here is Alberta Canada.
I have emailed Ford and am awaiting a response. What gives? Is the simple dye in the fuel harmful enough to break this thing? I feel like taking it back. I have a ranch and depend on farm fuel to keep my input costs down. Since our farm fuel is already low sulfur, what is the problem?
The fuel required for the 08 in the USA is the "ultra low sulfur fuel" as the low sulfur fuel will plug the catalytic convertor and then you will pay big $$$ to get a new one. The red dye is for the "untaxed fuel" which is for farmers or tax exempt entities. Here in the states it is a big fine if used on the road and they do check for it.
Thank you sir. I am having a hard time locating the 5 ppm ULSD the 2008 6.4 litre requires here in central Alberta Canada. The best I can find so far is 15 ppm (parts per million).
Around here (south Alabama) Dyed fuel is not ULSD. It smells different and ULSD is thinner if you feel it in your hands. I wouldn't take chances, red fuel can be either one.

Alazys:
I live in BC and the ULSD is available everywhere. I looked up Flying J (Shell Access Stations) in Alberta. All 30 Alberta Flying J stations have ULSD. ULSD is less than 15 ppm. The LSD low sulfur is more than 15 ppm up to 500 ppm. There is no 5ppm diesel fuel.
Dyed diesel in Alberta can either be LSD or ULSD. You will have to check with your farm supplier to determine if it is dyed ULSD or dyed LSD.
Be careful when you ask about the diesel fuel types. ULSD and LSD sound almost the same. It is strongly recommended by Ford not to use LSD as a fuel for your 6.4 PSD. You will plug up your DPF in a short time and it will be costly to replace. Try $2500 for a final bill. The money saving for farm dyed LSD will never get you repair money back. Your fuel supplier should be able to supply you with dyed ULSD.

15 ppm is what is required for the 6.4 and is considered ULSD.
Our dyed diesel around here is ULSD as well. Most newer tier 3 and tier 4 compliant heavy equipment has to run on it as well for emmissions and the fact that there running DPF as well.
I've ran it in my truck with no issues. I talked to a service manger about it and he said their was a rumor that the dye would cause some type of geling on the injectors, but i think it was just one of those scartatic things to avoid people from using it.

Your welcome. Glad we could help with the US standards VS
Canada standards for off road fuels.
Welcome to the forum
Also in the first article I quoted it states that after Sept 06 all fuel sold for "onroad use" is the ULSD
Enjoy your truck and fuel anywhere they sell good quality fuels.
My bulk distributor here in Phoenix supplies me with "dyed" ULSD & gives me a "use a lubricity additive on pre 2007 manufactured engines" disclaimer, I am still looking for a suitable red dye remover since Arizona now does random roadside tank dips on all diesel powered vehicles regardless of GVW anyone have any ideas?
im in phx also. we buy our diesel bulk 5000 gal of clear and 1500 gal of dyed at a time from canyon state. who do u buy from? i run a 379 exhd transfer and have never been pulled over 4 a check...
