front axle leak

i was under my truck yesterday installing another starter and i noticed the right (pass) side axle tube is leaking?? i know the seal is inside the axle tube, but to get to the seal do i have to pull the carrier out?? if i do this might be a good time to install lockers and 4.10's or 4.30's!

Yep, the carrier has to come out. Pushing the new seals is tricky if you haven't done it before.

Any excuse for more mods, that's my motto

I just finished installing an outboard seal on mine. I had to hone out the outer end of the axle tube a bit with a ball hone, but I finally got it to fit. I found the number somewhere on this forum, thanks to whoever posted it.

It is a 16146 seal, The Carquest number is 4762N, and it is 1.618 x 2.841 x .500

I was able to install the factory dust seal on the outer end of the axle shaft as normal. Time will tell how it works. I figure, it will cut my leak down to a minor annoyance at worst.

Just installing the Dust seal may only mask the real problem if you have fluid coming from the axle tube. The inner seal must be leaking IMHO.

I put a new dust seal on the axle shaft as normal. The dust seal rides on the face of the axle tube, so it does not interfere with the new seal I installed inside of the axle tube. I have some pics, pm me if you want them.

There was no way I was going to pull the differential. I wanted something that would go in the outer end of the axle tube.

I left the original axle shaft seal (at the inner side, next to the gears) in place, installed new dust seal, knuckle seals, etc.

The only change was the addition of the new seal mentioned above on the outboard end of the axle.
