widening axles?

I just read about a truck with widened axles to help from rubbing on the front leaf springs. Just curious but what does this entail and if i took it to a shop for this about how much? I have a 93' f250 ttb in the front but i don't think it would be possible for that, so I plan on a sas for a dana 60 and i have the 10.25" in the rear. Just any info doesn't have to be about my truck thanks.

I've never widened an axle, only narrowed them, but I imagine it's a matter of cutting the two axles and welding in extension pieces, then cutting the outer tubes and doing the same.

Where you cut and insert material probably depends if you want the spring perches to move out or remain where they are.

Personally, I'd hunt for an appropriate width axle you can live with first, as often times such parts are much less in the junkyard than having a shop hack up an existing axle.

Also, there is nothing stopping you from considering other oem axles... dodge or chevy, if they fit. Just change the front spindles as well so your one spare fits all four corners if 2wd, or the front axle as well if 4wd and you want it to match.

My friend's Dodge Ram D150 is like that... it has chevy 3500 axles front and rear and he paid less than $250 for both axles, complete including somewhat useful brakepads.
