Rear axle width change

Lost my notes. What year did ford widen the rear axle on the trucks? At some time in the future I want to put a higher geared rear axle in my '64 f250.
Thanks. john

73 was when the rear track was widened to match the widened front I-beam in 65. Your 64 tracks should match now.

You should be able to change ratios in the Dana although it will be a bit harder.

On an older thread I had mentioned what I wanted to do. According to the door plate my dana 60 has 4.56 gears so I would need to change the carrier. Throw in the 19 splined axles and it looks like it would be cheaper and easier to pick up a newer axle and put it in.

Much cheaper, and easier. The axle width didn't really change(maybe slightly, but...), the distance between the frame rails did. All you have to do is find a later model rear end with the ratio of choice and move the spring perches and shock mounts out a little. I changed the 4.56 in mine to a 3.73 out of a '81.
