Dinged Oil Filter...

Did my first oil change on the X today. I was installing the filter trying to get it snug with this filter wrnce I have and the darn thing dinged the outside of the filter housing. Not bad but I still worry wether or not this will affect oil flow...

I may be **** but we all are that's why we are here!

True, but as long as it isn't crushed too badly, it's fine. FWIW, I just hand tighten mine. It's absolutely as tight as I can get it, but it's still hand tight. Be careful cranking down too much -- they can get stuck to the block. Oh, and you did fill it with oil before you put it on, right??

For Whats Its Worth (FWIW)

P.S. Its not good to just hand tighten an oil filter...esp on a Diesel since they produce much higher oil pressure....well I read that in a diesel 101 article. Take it with a grain of salt.

I don't know that our diesels produce much more pressure than a gasser would. I've got a pressure sender for my oil pressure gauge at the rear of the block, close to the oil filter. About the most I ever see is 50 psi of oil pressure there. It raises with RPM to 50 psi and levels off there. I think there's a pressure relief valve in the oil filter mounting head that regulates the pressure. I've seen gassers that make up to 80 psi, and that's what has me thinking we don't have that much more pressure. I've been wrong before though.

It's not that much higher (~75 psi, I think?), at least in the low pressure side. My Ranger was up around 60 psi anywhere but just above idle. Besides, the guys that crank 'em down are probably the same ones that have their filters "welded" to the block.

Well u dont want to torque them for sure......but if you handtighten them you better make sure its not gonna loosen up. I read a post not too long ago where a guy had a dealer change oil and filter and after driving a couple hundred miles it started leaking oil....turns out his filter started backing off.........I dont think the presseure made it back off though, but more likely they never really snuged it on and the vibes caused it too back off.

I use this filter wrench to remove and to tighten back down the required 1 full turn from first contact. It's large enough to spread the load out on the shell so it does not crush or even dent the outer shell.
And I don't get sore wrists afterward. Priceless!

Mine normally runs in the range of 40psi at idle, 50psi runing down the road, but sometimes when the engine is cold I will see 80+ psi for a few minutes.

I'm like Kwikk, I take mine a full turn after contact with a filter wrench because I've had two filters that were hand tight work loose and leak.

Ya, I was just getting it snug 1 full turn (the sticker on the oil pan actually say 1 1/2 turns after contact) that seemed too tight. The filter wrench I got is one of those cheapy strap kind from autozone. It just put a little dent in the housing. Didn't think it would be a problem but you never know. I think I will be investing in one of those good filter wrenches before the next change though.

Thanks,

JB

When I spin mine on, it stops at some point, then I crank it down. But now that I think about it, I may be getting one full turn out of it by hand. I'll pay closer attention next time. I have yet to have any oil filter leak. I've been thinking about some extra gauges (like battery voltage), so maybe I'll get a triple under-dash pod and put in oil pressure, battery volts, and oil temp. The A-pillar will get the standard three.

My 17 yo changed his oil on the F150 a while back. A fews days later it still made a few spots of oil on the driveway. He brushed it off, but 'ol dad had the "feeling". I got under and checked the drain bolt - OK. Then noticed the drip on the filter. Jeemany xmas! the s.o.b. was about to fall off! He was damn lucky the motor didn't get fried.

I see about the same thing. When warm, it may drop to 30 psi at idle, 50 running down the road. Cold, I've seen as high as 75 psi, but it doesn't last long.

I'm a one turn after gasket contact too. Been doing that for 10+ years on all my vehichles (trucks, cars, bikes, lawnmowers, ect.) and never had one leak or get stuck on the engine.

i usually crank mine as tight as i can with my own hands and leave it at that, i cranked mine once a little too much last year with the wrench and like you guys said, it kinda welded itself, but after about 1/2 hour of learning some new words and half the filter missing it came loose. anyways since then, i hand tighten as far as i can and have never had a problem.
