Coolant in a diesel engine needs to have SCA added to it, this is designed to prevent cavitation, and it works. Most good quality diesel coolant will already have it mixed in. To check the SCA content in the coolant you can get testing strips from a diesel service shop (like a litmus test). Cavitation is caused by vibration that is unique to the diesel engine (could be other factors as well), so a filter may keep the coolant a little cleaner, but it will have little affect on cavitation.
Back when these engines were built they were SAND cast, like most things the factory cleaning was not sufficient. So after assy they found tons of sand floating around in some engines for years. So a filter system was devised, it works to retain the floating particulates whatever they may be. If you buy the filter they can come with or without a pellet inside to dispurse SCAs over a time period.
This is a kit that fits the PSD, many here have built their own.......
