I haven't used the universal ones, but I did put the factory ones in my 80.Wasen't that hard find you a donner truck or go to your local salvage yard,and get the wiring harness, window motors, locks, switches,ect. and have at it.
Yes, the wiring is the same, the only difference is the switches on the newer ones look different. I'm in the middle of doing this on one of my truck, but I had to quit for winter. I found doors from a 94 & 95 everything is compatible.
I went to the junkyard, found a truck that had power windows/locks and pulled out all the wiring needed all the way to the fuse box. It all plugs into the main harness, so you don't need to cut anything.
I'm in the process of doing my 86 now. I used a 88 Bronco as a donor and the hardest part so far was getting the old harness out of the Bronco. I ended up just taking the dash out so I could track everything but for the most part it will be a fairly easy change over it seems
