Sloppy Rear End

The differential in my F150 has a lot of slack in it when you let off the throttle and then get back into it. With both wheels on the ground there is no slack in the driveshaft. If you raise both rear wheels off the ground you can rotate either wheel a considerable amount before the driveshaft moves. The truck has a Ford nine inch axle in it. It doesn't have any kind of locker or clutch posi unit. What is causing this? There is no whine, howl, or any other noise coming from the axle while under power or coasting.

It may be spider gear wear. The 9 inch is easy enough to work on. When you have time I would go ahead and pull it apart and see what the problem really is.

Thanks! Would most likely install some sort of locker and a lower gear ratio while it was apart.
