replacing timing cover

Hello everyone,

I am going to be replacing the timing cover on my 76 E-150 with a 351W in it. I'm thinking of pulling out the radiator and trans cooler to hopefully get a little better access to the water pump and t-cover from the front, little tough for me to get at it from just under the hood, I'm a big guy. But anyways, besides putting on a new water pump and gaskets, anyone have any suggestions or tips on how I should go about this? Thank you

I would definitely pull the rad and the cooler maybe the grill too.I don't qualify as a big guy and I have trouble working on my van.Just be patient.Engine work on vans is kinda like working on a fork lift.50 pounds of **** in a 5 pound bag.

pull the bumper, grill, rad, ac condensor, trans cooler, and anything else in the way.
also the top of the core support comes off with i think 6 bolts.

you might as well replace the timing chain and gears if your that close, sure might save you some work in 6 months!

check the fuel pump too, you will be suprised how many are just starting to leak when you look at them.

If your vehicle has 100k+ miles, I agree with Jimbare. I would do the fuel pump too. It is way easier to do with everything off including the ps pump.

It'll be a couple of days until I get to work on it again but I will definately try everyones ideas. I will definatley replace the f/p, t-stat, and more than likely the timing gear set, as it is the original(motor was rebuilt about 10 years ago and the guy that did it put the original timing set back on it). Van has around 190,000 miles on it. It was well maintained by the previous owner. If I can get the van through the summer I plan on doing a rebuild to the motor/tranny. I know it was done ten years ago but out of those 10, it has sat for 4-5yrs. It was used mainly for pulling my gramps old camper around, it can pull like a raped ape. Damn it's got power. But thanks again everyone. I'll keep you updated.
