Headlights don't work on 98 Expy EB
HELP! I have a 98 Expy Eddie Bauer with the auto lamp feature. Over the past few months when I start it up the headlights at times have not come on. I've had to blink the brights on and off and all would be well. Well last night on a 4 hour drive I noticed that when I turned my blinker on the headlights would dim with the blinking of the turn signal. Then I smelled a hot smell and then NO Headlights! I could not get them to come on even by turning them on manually. The only way to get headlights was to pull forward on the stalk and hold it and that way I would get brights. All of the running and tail lights work fine. Any ideas.

Did you smell something hot inside the vehicle or when you got out? If you smelled it inside the vehicle, it might have been the "headlight" wires inside your multifunction switch. This switch is located on the top side of your steering column under the cover. This switch controls your low beams, high beams, hazards, turn signals, front and rear wipers and the signal from your brake light switch travels through this to your brake lights not including the high mounted brake light. You can remove this switch and check for continuity with a fluke meter. Its really easy to remove too.

Thanks Leos - I think your probably right. I smelled the hot smell while driving down the highway. I have it scheduled for a tranny flush anyway - I'll probably just wimp out and let the mechanic take care of it.
