I just purchased a 1997 F150 XLT 4x4. The fan speed switch is so dim it is hard to see. I suspect a bulb is burned out. In addition the top of the speedo seems quite dim compared to the rest of the dash, Bulb again? Last the little brake light on the dash comes on when I turn on the ignition but does not light up when the parking brake is set. I looked for wires to the parking brake pedal but don't see any. How do I get the dash apart to check/change bulbs? Is the brake light supposed to work with the parking brake? Thanks
For the fan switch bulb, pry the trim piece off from around the radio and climate control module (it just pops off). The climate control head is then held in with 7mm hex-head screws.
The cluster bulbs are a bit trickier to get to. You have to remove the headlight switch (a real treat until you have it out and see how it acually works....) and the larger trim panel, then remove the cluster. There are several threads on this site with explicit instructions in them. Advanced SEARCH keywords "+instrument +cluster +bulbs" and limit to this forum only should help you find them.
The cluster bulbs are 194s, the climate control ones likely are the same.
Yes, the BRAKE light should come on when the e-brake is set. The switch is barely visible by looking through the gap directly above the brake release lever. Removing the fuse panel cover helps in seeing it. Access to the switch and the connector is quite restricted due to its location.
