Service engine soon

I know it's probably a dumb question. but I've never owned a vehicle with this light. I bought the truck used and still don't have a manual. What is this little light trying to tell me?

You have something wrong that the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) has seen. You can go by your local AutoZone and they will scan it free for you. Write down the codes and post them here. We can help you figure out whats going on. They don't always give the best repair advise.

try taking out your gas cap and putting it back in then removing the positive cable from the battery leave it off for a min the putting it back that worked for my 02 4.2L ill get back to you with a website for the actual ford truck website where you can look up your owners manual there

i would recommend getting it scanned to find out why the light came on, THEN clear the code by disconnecting the battery for at least 15 min. The scanners at autozone can clear the codes also, but most of the time they wont let you clear them. After scanning, ask for the code (write it down) then ask them why they think the code came up (multiple opinions are better than one even if they are not quite accurate). Like LxMan1 said above, give us the code and we can help you out. As long as the truck is running fine, it is probably not a major problem. The sensors in vehicles these days can be really sensitive. Also, I should mention, even if the problem corrects itself, the check engine light will still remain on until the code is cleared (or by disconnecting the battery). Good luck.
