I have always been a Chevy guy until I bought my 03' F250 crew. I WILL NEVER GO BACK. I absolutely love this truck! The only thing I was wondering was what options I had for dash controlled 4 wheel drive engaging? On my old tahoe and avalanche it was all push button on the dash. I have a permanent leg injury and it's a real PITA to lock the hubs all the time.
What options are there for the super duty's to lock the hubs from inside the cab?
FORD has ESOF system. It has a dial on the dash with 2HI, 4Hi, and 4Lo. The hubs have both "Auto" and "Lock". While driving upto 50mph...you can rotate the dial on the dash to 4Hi and the system will send a vacuum pulse to the hubs via a vacuum actuator and an electric motor will engage the transfer case.
To engage 4Lo...you must be stopped with foot on brake, auto tranny in neutral or 6spd clutch pressed in...then rotate the switch to 4Lo.
On the instrument cluster...you will have inticator lights showing whether you are in 4Hi or 4Lo.
The hubs can also be placed in "Lock". This is good when you will be in 4x4 mode often like hunting. Or...just in case the "Auto" mode fails...a person could manually "Lock" the hubs.
Wait I have been turning the dial on my dash and climbing out and locking the hubs? So your saying I can just engage 4X4 by just turning the dial and I don't have to manualy get out and lock the hubs everytime. I drive alot of highway, is it ok to leave the hubs locked all the time? Sorry I'm new to fords.
Keep them in AUTO. Keep them clean and lubed and work them often. Check the bazzilion threads concerning the care and feeding of the ESOF hubs that are on these trucks.

Yup...that is what I am saying...as long as your ESOF system is working.
Why would you want your hubs in the "lock" position all the time? All that happens is you use more fuel. The only time I recommend leaving the hubs in the "lock" position is when off-roading...or do not trust your hubs in the "Auto" position...when driving on snow/ice roads.
