king pin questions

Hi every body, I have a 1976 f250 4x4 super cab. With a dana 60 front and rear. My problem is the allignmet on the truck is messed up. One tire caster in but the other tire is out. I was told there is a lot to do to fix it. Is this true? The mechanic who i talked to said something about caster shims. Has anybody heard of these, and where i might find them. If any body has any input it would be helpfull.

The only shims I know of are for mostly cars. You have king pins that wear, causing the wheels to lean in or out, about the same function as GM's upper and lower control arms with ball joints.Ford, you have king pins,if you have the right tools, you can do it your self, but there is a bit of disassembly involved, and you should be able to get them from your local parts store. And pick up a chiltons repair manual for ford trucks.Don't get haynes, because it tells you absolutely nothing.

I'm sorry,my bad.Dana 60,it is set up different. There may be shims, but you need to know how worn the housing is at the knuckle.Or what caused it to lean, normal wear,or abused.probably best if a front end mechanic did it for you,it can be a pain in the rear.

Yes you can do the the king pins your self but if you can afford it have a frontend shop do it. They can be a real b#%&* if you don't have the proper tools. A quick tip too. When you grease your king pins be sure the weight is off the wheel otherwise the grease won't get distibuted evenly. I always jack the tire off the ground first. Also check your shackle bushings for excessive wear and have them replaced if neccessary. Better to do it all at once than having to tear ot apart again.
