I recenty purchased a 1997 F-250HD 4X4 diesel and the cruise control does not work. Nothing happens when I press the on button on the steering wheel. I checked all the related fuses both under the dash and the hood and all the fuses are good. What should I test and what should I test for? Also is the vehicle speed sensor tied into the electronic control module for the the auto tranny?
You would need a scan tool capable of reading OBD II to diagnose this problem. The cruise control is totally controlled by the PCM on the DI diesels; there are no servos or throttle cables like the gas engines have. However, you can check the circuit between the cruise switches in the steering wheel and the connector down at the bottom of the steering column for continuity. If you can lay hands on a scan tool, the KOER test would test for proper cruise switch operation (you would press those switches during the test).
Your right I didn't connect (mental space out) that diesels use fuel to control throttle so everything is computer controled. I think I can get my hands on an OBDII scan tool pretty easy. It is a 45 min drive to work in the morning and it would be nice to have cruise.
That's the cruise control deactivation switch; it can cause no cruise control if the circuit or switch developed an open circuit. The switch on this vehicle is not connected to an always-on circuit; that's why the 05S28 campaign does not apply to this vehicle. The vehicles that caught fire had the switch continually powered which allowed them to slowly degrade, overheat, and burn under the right conditions.
