I have trouble starting my 79 f150 302cid for the first time each day. It doesn't matter what the outdoor temp is. It takes almost a minute and a half of on/off cranking to get it started. It spins over fast but doesn't seem to get any gas for the first couple of minutes of cranking. After the initial start for the day I just have to tap the key once and it starts right up. It runs like a top after I get it started. Any ideas are welcome.
Next time..pour about 4 oz in the throat of the carb before you turn the key (as quick as you can after pouring in the fuel)....to see if it fires right up.
If it does..you have a evaporation problem.
The next morning try pumping the carb about 10 times before turning the key to start to see if that works.
How long does the truck sit between shut down and next day start?
I have thought evaporation problem myself, but don't know of a cure. Remember this is a mechanical fuel pump so hitting the pedal several times b4 hitting the ignition won't cure the problem. The origional starting info from ford says to put the key in the on position then pump once (to set the choke i would guess) then crank without foot on gas pedal. Pumping during cranking doesn't seem to speed up the process. I'm thinking maybe a weak fuel pump? The problem exists from one day to the next even if driven daily.
What carb are you using? The stock 2150 series 2bbl,or are you using a holley 600cfm?If you are using the stock carb, and haven't done so,put a rebuild kit in it,sounds like your pump diaphragm is worn.I had the same problem with my 78,rebuilt the carb, made the correct adjustments, and she would hit first time every morning. Now if you are using an after market 4bbl,you need to make sure that both floats, and pump adjustments are set correctly, that's if it is a holley.
